The doctor playing the role of the lead partner and the immune system playing the role of the following partner. Initially, it may seem to be kind of a mess with a lot of stumbling and stepping on toes. The lead may not be in tune with the partner's natural movements and the partner and the follower may not yet be ready to allow the lead to lead. The same goes for immunomodulation. At the onset of food allergen desensitization therapy, it may appear that the immune system is actually resisting being coaxed into a particular direction by the medical team. However, as time goes on, we'll find that the two start to move as a unit. Instead of stepping on each other's toes and having herky jerky movements all over the place, it'll start to flow. And eventually, the immune system will start to just respond very nicely to manipulation by the medical team and will be able to coax it into the right direction.
